History of Central Florida Railroad Museum
On November 8, 1970, the National Railway Historical Society Inc.’s Central Florida Chapter was created with fourteen initial members. The Chapter has always aspired to have a permanent headquarters for chapter activities and a railway museum. On October 22, 1979, the Chapter acquired the former Tavares & Gulf Railroad station in Winter Garden from the Seaboard Coast Line Railroad and began renovating it. The Central Florida Railroad Museum’s official opening took place on May 21, 1983. The organization’s monthly meetings are held in the recently restored Ken Murdock Gallery at the depot’s eastern end, which is connected to the old Roper Building. On August 13, 2012, the Chapter’s membership voted to withdraw from the National Railway Historical Society, Inc. and form the Central Florida Railway Historical Society, Inc. According to the government, the transition took place on January 1, 2013.
